Teaching Your Child the Value of a Dollar

Saying No Can Teach Your Child The Value Of A Dollar

There's no doubt that raising children is one of the most expensive endeavors out there. If it's not the child care, the amount of food they eat, the constant buying of new clothes, school supplies, medical and field trips, it's expenses that your kids want and that everyone else in their clique that kills your budget. At some point, all parents have to learn how to say “no” to their children before mass consumerism takes a toll on the family budget and tempers.

Set An Example for Your Child

The best way to reduce the almost addictive tendency of our modern culture to spend, is to set a good financial example for the children.  Involve them in some of the decision-making process. Tell them why a camping trip is much better for the family instead of a huge blow-out at the latest Disney resort. If they still want the Disney trip, involve them in how you, as a family, intend to budget that expense to pay for it. This way, you are not so much denying them what they want as you are teaching them the value of a dollar.

Teach Your Child How To Overcome Financial Obstacles

How you use your money shows up in the level of stress you carry with you. If you are living payday to payday, your kids may not understand, but they can feel your anxiety. As you learn how to manage debt, use credit wisely even if it is credit cards, student loans, or payday loans that you are repaying, be sure to pass on what you've learned to your children. They may not pretend they're listening now, but it will come back to them when they most need it.
