Teaching your dog to make good choices

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

You all have heard me go thru the woes of dog proofing my home office.  I found out the real problem is not that my dog doesn’t listen, but I have never truly taught her the meaning of the word NO.

I have been working with a great dog trainer named Dennis Hill, http://www.dogsense.net, who opened my eyes to the fact that we just say no to our dogs without teaching them what that really means.

Just spending one hour with Dennis he helped me teach me dog what is right, what is wrong and how to make good choices.  Now Ginger is finally listening and not being the destructive puppy she was.

The cool thing about Dennis’ technique is that he doesn’t believe you have to discipline your dog to death.  There is no need for chokers, screaming no, or hitting your dog ever.  Calmly saying no and rewarding with a treat for good behavior works wonders in dogs.
