Kristie T and Michelle - Remembering Old Times at the 20 Year Class Reunion  7

Posted on August 8th, 2007. About Fun Stuff, Recent Posts.

kristie t and michelleMichelle and I had a BLAST this weekend attending our 20 year high school reunion. It was so much fun to see how our classmates had “grown up”. We had only 87 people in our graduating class. And cause we were such a small school, we knew these people from Kindergarten through High school. We were kind of like family.

We had a great time. There was a fun trivia game. Then we watched a great movie (thanks Wendy and Sydney for the months it took to put that together).

And for me and Michelle, it was just like old times. It was so much fun to get dressed and got out again after all these years. You see, Michelle and I have known each other since 6th grade. And after high school, I moved away to Chicago and she settled and started a family in Iowa. So we love getting together, letting the kids play, and having girlfriend time again.

Have you gone to a class reunion recently? How was yours? Any cool stories to share?

Move over Christmas: Today is Festivus: The Holiday for the Rest of Us  1

Posted on December 23rd, 2006. About Fun Stuff, Recent Posts.

I personally celebrate Christmas. As a Christian, it is a day to honor the birth of Christ. It reminds me to live as though Christmas was everyday in your heart.

Not everyone celebrates Christmas. Others may celebrate Kwanza or Hannukuk. But what about others, what can they celebrate?

Introducing Festivus: The Holiday for the Rest of Us… (See Seinfeld Festivus episode here)

My husband was Googling and found reference to Festivus, a holiday celebrated on December 23 in Wikipedia. This holiday was first made public on the show Seinfeld in December 1997. Since then, the holiday has taken on a “cult-like” following of it’s own. Festivus was created as an alternative holiday in response to the commercialization of Christmas.

The holiday traditions include the traditional Festivus Pole that requires no decoration, a Festivus Dinner of meatloaf or spaghetti in red sauce. Then after dinner, the family participates in the “Airing of the Grievances” where your family gathers around and tells each other all the ways they have disappointed each other over the past year. Then finally, the celebration ends with Feats of Strength when the head of the household is pinned in a wrestling match.

Apparently this holiday is based on the real life celebrations of Daniel O’Keefe, one of the Seinfeld writers.

Whatever holiday you celebrate, I wish you and your family the very merriest of holidays and a very happy and prosperous New Year!

What fun holiday traditions does your family partake in every year?

3) I used to sing in the contemporary rock group at my church.

4) As a kid, I used to sell pet rocks and mud pies to my neighbors who were kind enough to buy them for a quarter each.

5) I am a descendant of Daniel Boone.

Sherman Hu
Denise Wakeman

In Recognition of an Amazing Woman - My Mom Who is Being Honored on Wednesday!  1

Posted on November 12th, 2006. About Fun Stuff.

I just had to share how excited I am for my mom. She is an artist and a teacher at a school in Conroe, Texas. They asked her to do a mural in the school. And to be very honest, the school thought they were just getting a nice painting. And what my mom created is really a masterpiece that encompasses the entire hallway. She finally finished it after working on it for 6 months.

It’s funny, she said that the other teachers came up to her and said, we thought the painting would be nice, but we have NO idea it would turn out like this. She really blew them away.

Anyway, they are doing a big unveling ceremony for it on Wednesday. I guess the papers, TV etc are coming out to cover it. And they are having a ceremony to honor her, her work, and her contribution to the community.

So, I just wanted to share how proud I am of my mom. Everyone deserves one shining moment in their lives - this is hers. I am SO proud of her.

Since I am in Chicago, I haven’t seen it. But I guess it’s got the “I think I can” Choo Choo Train going thru it and so other cool stuff woven in. I am having her send a picture which I will post here later.

My mom taught me that you can do ANYTHING you set your mind to. She has fought against some terrible things in her life. She has always been put down for being different. But it’s because of her different take on things and her creativity that she has really made a difference.

So here’s to my mom. If any of you are in Texas and see anything in the newspapers or on TV about Paula Nelson from Conroe, Texas (by Houston) and her mural at the school in Conroe, please let me know.

How has your mom inspired you?
