Why I REALLY Don’t Need to Buy Another Marketing Book…  9

I’m sure your library is probably as crazy as mine. But sometimes I think I have so many awesome resources, that I forget what I have. Someone once said that the only thing that will be different 10 years from now is the books you read, the people you meet, and the experiences you have.

I have more the enough books that I’ve read - that’s for sure. My goal for next year is to IMPLEMENT what I have read. No more learning (which will be hard - I love learning)

Well, here are the books I have in my library. I have read 80% of them. The others, need to sit down and read.

Is your library as big as this? - And there are LOTS of ebooks and books in the basement haven’t even accounted for here.

Got Books? “Read” While you Work  5

Posted on September 5th, 2006. About Cool Tools, Professional Speaking, Writing.

It’s the same story, too many books, too little time to read them. If that’s the case, then you might want to check out Audible - they are a new audio book store. You can pick up some of the top business books and personal development titles there. You can listen to it on your Ipod , MP3 player , Itunes , or your favorite media player .

And if business books aren’t your fancy, they have a lot of other titles too from a wide variety of broadcasters, entertainers, magazine and newspaper publishers, podcasters, and business information providers.

So you might as well learn something while you are typing on that keyboard.

P.S. Authors : have you thought about turning your paperback book into an audio book? Those people with Ipods are hungry for content. And there’s a whole lot less competition. If you don’t have a great voice, you can get a voice talent to read it for you!

Check out Audible audio bookstore here.

Sell Books At Starbucks!  2

Posted on August 24th, 2006. About Selling, Writing.

Bookstores are a lousy place to sell books. But who’d have thought that you could sell books at Starbucks while drinking your Mocha Latte?

One of my buddies, Don Paullin of Hiring Firing Experts, just release his hillarious and awesome book “Hire Hotdogs Fire Baloney” about how to hire the best people for your company. And if you can believe this, he is selling books everyday at Starbucks while he is drinking his coffee. He just sits at Starbucks with his laptop and has a few copies of his book laid out on the table. A lot of people stop to ask him about his book. And Don’s such an awesome salesman, they always end up buying a copy of his book from him.

I am meeting Don at Starbucks for coffee today to catch up. I can’t wait to see him “in action” selling books at Starbucks.

Tell me, have you ever sold your books in an interesting non conventional place?

Dear Abby move over: Here’s how to Get your Own Nationally Syndicated Newspaper Column  1

Posted on August 5th, 2006. About Writing.

Have you ever dreamed about having your own newspaper column like Dear Abby or Tips from Heloise? Having a nationally syndicated newspaper column can turn any writer into a nationally recognized expert.

Parenting expert Jodie Lynn is an award-winning internationally syndicated family/health columnist and radio personality. Her column, Parent to Parent, has been successful for over ten years and continues to grow in popularity with a readership of up to 20 million readers.

Syndication SecretsAnd what’s cool about Jodie’s column is that she syndicated it herself. And in her book, Syndication Secrets she shares the exact process she used to do it. It’s really great. She shares everything from deciding what to write about, writing query letters, pitching editors on the phone, follow up, organizational tips, Internet ideas and straight through to editorial rebuttals. She helps you get inside the editor’s head so you know how to speak their languange when you pitch the column.

It’s really excellent. I had a chance to review it. And I admit, it kind of got my daydreaming a bit about, “Hmmmm…. what column would I like to write?”

Take a look at Syndication Secrets here:

Forget Blog, Amazon’ presents, the Plog!  (Leave a Comment)

Posted on May 16th, 2006. About Writing.

If you are an author, the next best thing in book marketing is here. Enter the Plog, Amazons own trademark term that’s short for personal blog. And Amazon.com has introduced it as a marketing vehicle for authors.

Here’s how a Plog works

When a customer logs into Amazon, they will see a personalized Plog homepage that features links to posts written from authors whose books they have recently purchased. The customer can directly share thoughts, questions, and feedback regarding the book. The author in turn can post a reply.

Is it working? Who knows. But over 1,000 writers have already joined Amazon Connect to take advantage of the Plog.

Here is Amazon’s definition of a Plog:

Your Amazon.com Plog is a personalized web log that appears on your customer home page. Every person’s Plog is different (hence the name) and just like a blog, your Plog is sorted in reverse chronological order. Each post also gives you the opportunity to provide feedback to the sender as to whether you liked the post or not. This feedback loop means your Plog becomes even more relevant and interesting over time. Your Plog will appear if you are logged into our web site and is visible only to you.

Authors with at least one book for sale on Amazon.com are eligible to participate in AmazonConnect.

Has anyone had any experience with a Plog? Are you an author who has tried this? What are your thoughts about how Plogs help to market your books? Is it worth an author’s time to check this out? Is it a hit or miss? Share your thoughts about Amazon’s Plog here.

Get Paid to Write your Book!  4

Posted on January 17th, 2006. About Information Products, Writing.

Any aspiring authors out there? How would you like to have people pay you to write your book? Here’s a cool idea for you!

One of my dear friends, Philip Humbert, had a brilliant strategy for making money while he wrote his book. He started a coaching group around the topic of his book. So each participant paid a fee to be a part of this group. Every week, Phil had to write a new chapter which of course was the topic of discussion for the week. So that kept him on track with his writing. He had an audience expecting the new chapter and he couldn’t let them down. He got instant feedback on his material - what made sense, what didn’t.

Talk about working smart! Just goes to show all you authors that writing a book doesn’t have to be hard.

Do you know of any other cool stories about ways to make book writing fun? Share your book writing stories here!
