HUGE Idea for Keywords and Search Optimization – like duh!

Search engine optimization, keyword research, keyword strategy- if you think you are choosing the BEST keyword phrases, think again!

I had a huge “aha” moment today in talking with SEO expert Roy Montero. (Hint – Roy will give you a free 1 hr SEO consultation if you ask!) I am very well versed in SEO and and can whip up a search engine optimized web page in about 5 minutes flat. But where I was really struggling was around strategy for choosing the best keyword phrases. I mean obviously there are thousands of keyword phrases that you potentially would want to rank for. So how do you prioritize to choose which keywords to optimize for first?

The revelation – start with keyword phrases relating to phrases that you can monetize most easily.

So what do you sell? advertising, your book, consulting – what are the keyword phrases people search for around that? Well guess what, I hadn’t optimized a single page relating to those phrases at all.

My mistake was going way too broad after major keyword phrases or minor low hanging keywords phrases relating to that. I also was going around other related subjects I thought my target audience might be interested in.

Have any of you ever taken that approach to seo? How do you determine keyword phrases you will do your keyword research and search engine optimization for?

That’s a great point, Kristie. It’s almost ‘obvious’ yet I bet hardly anyone does it! Roy is great. He’s the king of SEO.

Kristie, Here are Some Things Your Mom May Not Have Taught You About SEO

Here are 3 Cool Ways to Find out If Someone Says Something About You Online:

    1) Google Alerts: I found out about this post because I am subscribed to Google Alerts.

    2) Technorati: Another cool way to check if anyone is talking about you (in the blogosphere, that is) is to check Technorati and also Technorati Mini.

    3) Technorati Mini in Firefox Sidebar: If you’ve pimped out your Firefox browser you’ll want to read this tutorial about Technorati Mini.

And Kristie, here are a few ideas for boosting the capabilities of your blog

    - Subscribe to Comments: I highly recommend installing the Subscribe to Comments — Another RoyRecommended WordPress Plugin to make it easy for us to know when there are additional comments posted because we’ll receive an eMail alert.

    - Preview Comments: And … If you find it useful for your contributors to be able to PREVIEW their comments before actually posting them then I highly recommend Live Comment Preview — Another WordPress Plugin.

    - No Follow Tag for Comments And while we’re on the subject of you giving out votes via links, Kristie, I’m going to assume that you are not aware that you need to add the Follow URL (WordPress Plugin) in order to remove the nofollow attribute from the comment and comment author URLs.

In other words, the links above (in the comment author URLs) for Kelly and Heather are not going to pass any PageRank and Link Reputation and I’m quite sure that since you moderate your comments, trackbacks and pingbacks that you’ll want to give your valued content contributors all the ranking points that they deserve, right Kristie?

And a big shout out to Kelly McCausey and Heather Eagar for their heartfelt compliments. THANK YOU ladies and you know how much I appreciate you.
